Charlie McInerney is not your typical high school kid. He just got back from orientation at Ohio Technical College in Cleveland, Ohio, having driven there and back in a 1983 Mercedes 300 D Turbo Diesel that he converted to operate on vegetable oil. Herald, April 4th

As a French teacher at RUHS, Brigitte Savard has had the opportunity to take students on trips abroad every year.
“We’ve traveled to Montreal, Quebec City, and Guadeloupe, a French overseas department in the Caribbean,” she noted. “This year, I am traveling with 14 of my advanced students to Guadeloupe again. While our first visit in 2015 was a chance to develop ties to the local schools there, this time, the trip is largely based on an exchange between RUHS and their local high school.”
The trip is scheduled for March 2-12, and during their 10-day stay, they plan on visiting elementary schools to offer a short workshop in American culture and English language, and hiking a volcano.
“We’ll also be trying our hand at choosing, buying, and cooking local fish, among other things,” Savard added. “After those days on our own, students will be welcomed into local homes where they will spend every afternoon, evening and night with local families.”
The Guadeloupean students will then come visit Randolph from March 17-22, landing in Boston a few days before, and traveling to Vermont on the 17th.
“These students are 16-18 years of age, and they know English well enough to communicate effectively,” Savard noted. “While we have a number of families who have volunteered, we’re looking for a few more local families who might be interested in hosting these teens.”
Responsibilities for the hosts include greeting the students upon arrival to RUHS, and planning some fun activities over the weekend. For the weekdays, hosts are asked to help visiting students get to RUHS every morning, where there will be activities planned between 8 a.m.-4 p.m.
If you are interested in being a host, please contact Savard at 802- 989 4670 or email her at firstname.lastname@example.org for an application form. Applications are due January 16. A small stipend is available to help offset the costs of hosting.
There will be a free informational dinner for hosts on Sunday, Feb. 19.
