Physical Education/Health Departments

Students are required to take Physical Education 9 during their freshman year and Physical Education 10 before graduation. Physical Education 9 receives 1 credit, and Physical Education 10 receives 1/2 credit.

Physical Education 9 and Physical Education 10
Students in Physical Education will participate in a variety of fitness, recreational and wellness related activities. Emphasis will be placed on designing, implementing and evaluating a Personal Fitness Plan (PFP). Students will be introduced to the physiological and developmental concepts which undergird a sound fitness program. Instruction in accurately assessing strength, flexibility, cardiovascular fitness and body composition will be provided. Participation in a number of team, individual and “lifetime” recreational activities will be required in addition to completing the PFP portfolio. Vital Results from the Vermont Framework of Standards addressed through the curriculum include: Clarification and Restatement, Critique, Artistic Dimensions, Problem Solving Process, Taking Risks, Persevering, Planning and Organization, Goal Setting, Development, Healthy Choices, Fitness, Teamwork, Interactions, Conflict Resolution, Roles and Responsibilities, Fields of Knowledge addressed are: Audience Response, Critique, Artistic Problem Solving, Dance, The Human Body.

Health Education 1/2 credit
Health Education is a comprehensive course designed to assist and equip students with developing life skills to maintain and improve their health, prevent disease, and reduce health-related risk behaviors. The course allows students to acquire and demonstrate health-related knowledge, skills, and practices. The course is required for one semester in the sophomore year. It is guided by the Vermont’s Framework of Standards and Learning Opportunities and the National Health Education Standards. Topics of instruction include: Mental & Emotional Health, Substance Abuse Prevention, Personal Health & Responsible Decision Making, Behavior Change, Growth & Development/Human Sexuality, CPR & First Aid, Consumer Health, and Media Literacy.

Wellness Management Education Semester Course (Grades 11-12) 1/2 credit
The Wellness Management Education Course at RUHS is designed to meet the needs of students with health and fitness interests. Students will have an opprtunity to design and receive specific instruction regarding wellness information and activities. WME is an elective course. The content of theWME course goes beyond the regular health and physical education classes. The major thrust of the course is to give students awareness, knowledge, and activity based skills to effectively deal with wellness issues and interests. Permission of instructor required.
